How to Get Designer Sizing Right When You Shop Online

The biggest reason people hesitate to buy premium clothing online is fit. A jacket that looks perfect on screen can arrive with sleeves an inch too short, and nobody enjoys the return shuffle. The good news is that most sizing surprises are predictable once you know what to look for.

Start with your measurements, not your size label. A European 38, an Italian 42, a UK 10 and a US 6 can all describe roughly the same garment, and designers rarely agree on where those lines fall. Take four numbers with a soft tape measure: chest or bust, natural waist, hips, and inseam. Save them in your phone. Comparing your own numbers against a garment's measurements will tell you far more than any generic size chart.

Measure a garment you already love. Lay a shirt or blazer you own flat and measure it pit to pit, shoulder to shoulder, and along the sleeve. Compare those numbers to the listing.

Learn how a house cuts its clothes. Italian labels often run slim through the chest and short in the sleeve. Many American labels cut generously. Japanese sizing tends to run one to two sizes small by US standards. Knowing a brand's habits turns guesswork into a decision.

Let the fabric decide close calls. Stiff wool, denim and leather hold their shape and are unforgiving if you sit between sizes, so size up. Knits, jersey and anything with a little elastane will give and recover, so your true size is usually right.

Buy for the shoulders. Almost every part of a jacket can be altered by a good tailor, but the shoulder seam is the exception. If that seam sits at the edge of your shoulder bone, the piece is worth investing in. Sleeves, waist and hem are straightforward fixes and usually cost less than people expect.

Finally, think about how you will actually wear the piece. Layering a coat over knitwear all winter? Size up. A slip dress meant to skim? Stay true.
